1.     I define feminism as the ideology and actions behind the idea of equality between men and women.
a.     I think Bell Hooks definition to feminism is a very good one, its short and right to the point and I think it does a great job at describing what feminism truly is.
b.     When comparing Bell Hooks definition to the first one given by urban dictionary there is one word that sticks out to me in the urban dictionary definition, “potential”.  By saying that feminism is that women should be treated as potential equals it means that you still think they are not equals, therefore I don’t think this is a good definition of feminism and Bell Hooks is still better.
2.     Based on this definition I would say I’m not a feminist, but I’m not Not a feminist if that makes sense.  I am not a feminist because I am not actively doing anything to change how women are viewed. But I wouldn’t say I am fully not a feminist because I agree with what feminists stand for and I wouldn’t stand idly by while a woman was being discriminated against, I just don’t actively do anything about it.
3.     A few popular examples of Patriarchy would be, the fact that men still get paid more than women for the same job.  Another is women being frown upon for promiscuity where men are not, also women not being included for the military draft or being ineligible for certain military units.
a.     These examples are maintained because apart from the first example I gave, it seems like nothing is going to be done about them.  At least most companies are trying to equalize the pay between men and women but for the other examples I don’t know what is going to have to happen to fix them.

  1. I feel the same way that frank was talking about in his blog. Hey came up with the some good points and examples of "patriarchy"

  2. I also think that the definition is very good, I always had a generalized view of what feminism was, and feminists themselves. So far the book is shedding new light on that for me.

  3. I totally agree with you when you pointed out that in the definition the word potential is used. What's up with that? I find that to be pretty offensive and it really caught me off guard. I wonder what bell hooks would say? I see what you are saying when you say that you are NOT a feminist. It's a little difficult for a male to really decide on how we should and can stand up to feminism. We want to say that we are "Pro-Feminist" but not really sure how to define that statement.
