OUTLINE
1) Attractiveness
§ Hello My name is Courtney Dravitzki
§ During this presentation I’m going to discuss the idea of female attractiveness and how this has changed over time.
2) Hott or not?
§ Take a look at these photos. I’m sure that in your mind you can easily categorize these women according to their beauty. Which woman or women are beautiful…and not so beautiful?
§ Ideals of beauty are constantly changing.
§ Not only are they changing, but according the reading in Chapter 4, this ideal of beauty is “difficult for all persons to attain because the norms are unrealistic.” (97)
§ This beauty is “even more difficult to attain for persons with disabilities, persons with darker skin, persons of larger size, and older people.” (97)
3) Throughout the Ages
§ Beauty has been shifted through different phases and times.
According to the reading, “these changes are confined by aesthetic shifts but are influenced by social, economic, and political factors.”
§ These photos depict some of the changes in fashion and beauty from 1910 to the 1960s
4) The painful truth is that while women are striving to mimic the beauty that surrounds them in the media their efforts are being met with unrewarding consequences of…
§ … pressure to become someone that they are not, becoming victims of objectification, developing eating disorders, and also developing a low self esteem and self worth
5) This is a quote that really grabbed me in the reading…
§ Can I have a volunteer to read it?
6) Do you agree with this?
§ What are your thoughts or feelings about this?
§ Is it a big issue or not?
§ How does this affect both men and women?
7) I now would like to share a couple videos with you that illustrate the points I have made today
§ The first is on the attainability of beauty and the second is on beauty throughout the ages.
