Blog 2 Response

1.     I think the main contradiction today is that males are expected to be the primary breadwinner and the leader of the household.  This view has been spread for longer than most of us have been alive and is still somewhat expected today.  Also that men are seen as stronger and not supposed to show any emotion is another contradiction.
I think these stereotypes occur on a societal level because it is society that is helping portray these stereotypes and images.
2.     The main thing taken away from men is the ability to express themselves in any other way but extremely masculine and emotionless.  This is something frowned upon by society and considered something reserved for women.
a.     Yes I do think being born male has its privileges.  On a more biological and funny note, we can pee anywhere we want and it is convenient for us. On a more serious not government wide you will see that it is a male dominated profession and that women aren’t quite taken as seriously when stepping into that realm.
3.     Men need to be liberated from emotional stereotypes and be able to express emotion freely.  Its far to common for parents to scold male children for expressing emotion or crying.  A mens liberation would be freeing and allow the image of a man to change.  You would see men becoming more in tune with their emotions, maybe not always getting into pissing contests just because it shows masculinity.  An alternative masculinity would probably look like some roles females mostly play such as being a stay at home father or filling those types of roles.

  1. It is very true that men usually are born with more privileges. Its not so bad in our country, but in many Asian cultures. Many females are aborted or placed up for adoption because females are still somewhat seen as second class citizens.

  2. I agree with you on number 1, but I think the stereotypes penetrate all levels - it is isn't solely societal.

  3. Great start with the blog. For future posts think about how you can expand some of your points with an example or 2. Bring in visuals and video content to enhance these points as well.
