On the question of what rights do we think are taken away from men due to patriarchy, it was split between either men didn't really have any rights taken away. " I had never thought of patriarchy as ever taking away rights from men. However, now that I think about it, I suppose that patriarchy could take a way a man's right NOT to be the breadwinner of the family."(Andrea) and that the main right men lost from patriarchy was the right to express themselves emotionally. I feel like patriarchy takes away the right to express emotions from men. If they show their emotions, they are considered to be weak, or at least that's how they think they will be viewed. Society does not find it unnatural to see a woman cry in public, but if a man was crying, it would be considered out of the ordinary. (Ashley R) These are all valid points to the effect that the role of patriarchy has on men.
On the question of if men receive privileges because they are men, it was pretty much 100% agreement that men do receive privileges over women. I personally see this trend as a dying paradigm, but it is still strong enough to make a huge societal impact. But women are on the rise throughout the professional world. "I believe so. I think in our western "civilized" society, we've learned to disguise the way we undermine and discriminate against females, yet it persists. For the most part, equality has been reached in a legal sense. However labels of power, success, aggression, discipline, and intelligence are conditioned to be inherent with males. In many places around the world the economic, social, and personal rights of men and women are far from balanced."(Bret Zingula)
