well the first sexist thing that I see in this
clip is that women stay awake if they have kids but men don’t? I don’t really
understand how they justify that but okay.
Next you see her refer to bad traffic as a mans excuse? Last time I checked women drive too and can
also get stuck in bad traffic. I don’t
think this movie would be successful if it was a man instead doing the same
role, because that’s not what people are use to seeing in society so they
wouldn’t be able to relate to it, and that’s what people want, something
relatable. This clip from parks and recreation is after a co-worker gets shot
in the head with a shotgun (he’s okay) and she is giving excuses to why she
shot him and they are all very sexist towards women.
2.
The parent in this commercial is trying to get
her daughter to conform to what society says she needs to do and wear when she
clearly just wants to wear camo and act more masculine. I don’t think there is any reason why the
daughter needs to wear pink. I do not
think they would make a similar commercial with a boy wearing feminine clothing
because as society is right now males are dominate so it wouldn’t reflect well
on that, I am not saying its right I am just observing.

I cant really think of any children’s books that
I grew up with that are sexist. Then again
I didn’t really read a lot growing up or have anyone to read to me so I was not
exposed to that area. After looking
online I see a few books that could be sexist but there really aren’t particular
explanations as to why, and since I haven’t read them or know the story I cant
really make a good comment on it.
In reference to the Parks and Rec clip:
ReplyDeleteI love this example, but I think the show uses these stereotypes in this clip as proof to how stupid and ridiculous they are. Through humor, I thin the show is trying to discontinue these existing stereotypes.
P.S. Love this show! :)

ReplyDeleteI also had a difficult time thinking of books I read as a kid. I was always out playing outside with my friends. Reading was something that I did at school and I always thought it was an activity for girls. Thats why I question how much of an impact these stereotypes depicted in these books have on our lives. I watched TV and played video games and just wasn't into reading books.
ReplyDeleteI think in regards to some of your comments in the first question, the movie was trying to really emphasize feminine roles and excuses rather than looking at gender neutral or masculine excuses. So, yes, while it is true women can drive, I think they were just trying to show that it's socially acceptable for a woman to blame it on a feminine excuse and not be further questioned by it. But overall, good post!
ReplyDeleteLove the Parks & Rec clip. It is literally the best show I have ever watched. For your next blogs, think about how you can expand on your responses and also link these ideas to specific passages in the reading and also the text. Also think about how you can use visuals to enhance some of these points as well.
