Blog response #5

1) The first clip seems to portray the women's suffragist movement, specifically women's right to vote. The second clip then is related to the Civil Rights Movement. I don't think there's any racial bias in these clips, because the clips seem to portray the message that the movie is supposed to send. I suppose how the first clip ony shows white women fighting for the right to vote might be a little biased, but that may have been how it really was back then. I feel as though white women could relate to the feelings of suppression of black people, and recognized that women as well as minority races were struggling for equality.

1) I agree with Bell Hook's idea that maybe one of the causes of male violence in the home is men using their home life as an outlet to gain back respects and feelings of power and masculinity when they don't get these feelilngs outside the home. I also think an underlying cause of male violence in the home is simply learned by maybe a parent of their own, or just watching other men around them while they were growing up.
I think that much of the public refuses to link the violence to patriarchal thinking or male domination because most of the public probably doesn't realize how much men still rule society. These may be people who think there is more equality around us then there actually is, just becuase women can now vote, have the same jobs as men, etc.
2) I think domestic violence between spouses and children can be related becuase I think any form of domestic violence probably effects everyone liveing there in some shape or form. The clip shows a perfect example of how the spouses were physically fighting, and the daughter was left watching, scared for her mother's life and even tries to distract her dad by jumping on him. I would imagine that even though the little girl wasn't the target of the violence, she still will be traumatized.
People need to realize that any form of domestic violence, even if its not directly being done to a child, can and will effect the child if he/she is around it, and same for child abuse and a parent. In the heat of an angry moment and violence takes place in the home, the spouses may not be fully aware that their child can hear, or see them and are probably effected negatively by it.

  1. I agree when you take about males learning violence from a young age. If a young boy watches his father beat his mom then more than likely he will beat women when he gets older. It is such a shame when children have to witness such a horrific event. The people that you surround yourself with can have a major impact on the decisions you make. I also think the media has a major influence on domestic violence and we need to keep our kids away from all the trash t.v. thats on these days. Great post!

  2. I agree with both you and Steve about males learning violence from a parent or the men around them growing up. I think Steve pointing out the media as an influence is a great addition. I also see the toys that boys are socialized to play with as contributing to that violent aspect. Are there any media examples that you could add to illustrate your points? :)
