Question #1 What type of sexist roles do you see in this clip? Are you surprised by these roles? Would this ever be considered a movie if it was a man (I don’t know how HE does it)? Does this media example embody what bell hooks is trying to prevent? What are other media examples that still hold on to sexist ideas? (hint, hint: This would be a good place to incorporate media into your blog post!)
after watching this clip, i think that is safe to say that the women is playing both roles in the relationship. it seems like she is the one that is taking care of the kids, being the "breadwinner", and still trying to make her husband happy! i dont think that if the tables were turned it would be a good movie. it just seems like there is more drama with a women, or at least the role that she is playing. lets face it, now days these types of films are chick flciks which almost every women likes, and or, brings their boyfrineds/ husbands with!!! oviously we see how the women is trying to live her life, be apart of the kids, but still do something that she loves, which is her current job. As for media, well... media has everything to do with how relationships are valued now a day. its terrible yes, but it is true!!!
Question #2 What were your initial reactions to the commercial? Why is it not okay that her daughter is not in pink? Do you think they would ever make a similar commercial with a boy in more feminine clothing? Why?
first thought of the little girl.... Tomboy.... and the mother was just the average looking mother back in the day. the hair was cut short, pink shirt and etc... it is ok for the daughter to be dressed like that! MEDIA put this image of what people should look like, dress, act, and etc... thats the only reason why we see any problem with this video!!! never!!!!!!!!!!! main reason i think that women have a lot of power with how our society views things now a day. plus nobody looks up to a male that is dressed in pink/etc... but a female its different!!! how????? I have no idea!!!!!
Question #3 Name a children’s book that embodies the sexist notions that bell books discusses in this chapter. Why do you think the book has these sexist ideas? What future consequences do you think that these books have?
honestly when i was younger i didnt do that much reading.... so this is a hard question to answer... when i think of kid books though i feel like they are made for a boy/girl. if it is for the boy it will have action, dirtyness, and etc... and vise versa if it would being made the girl. and oviously but making books like this we are telling people that it is not ok for their children to like girl things if they were a boy and vise versa!!! sad... yes but true!!!!
Hi Seth,
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting how you (and a lot of other people) frame it as the woman playing "both roles" in the relationship. It clearly shows the different expectations that both the man and woman play in a relationship, although I think those stereotypes have lessened some over the years as there are a lot of families with both parents in the workforce. I also think it's interesting how women are always questioned about how they do it all. Do you think men are questioned this much, why or why not?
Nice blog!
Seth,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't think of any books that I read when I was younger either. I just remember being outside and doing boy things. I was always under the assumption that girls were the ones who read the books and not boys. My sisters read a lot of books and when there was a book that I was interested in I might have read part of it and go bored. I watched cartoons instead of reading unless it was for school. Boys would rather be out getting dirty and riding their bikes!
I really enjoyed the media examples and pop culture references that you made. It would be nice to see images incorporated here as well and maybe a video example. For future blogs, think about how you can connect your ideas with passages from the reading and key terms/concepts from the text.
